There's lot of affordable options out there ranging from scooby's that are awd to cheap fwd cars. My girlfriend is looking into buying an old 4wd Jeep Cherokee as her winter beater.I have a `98 Nissan Sentra as my daily driver/winter car. Nice car, handles decent in the snow, isn't embarrassing to drive in the summer and has an sr20 in it so there's potential to play with it at some point in the future.
But whatever you do....don't rent....the money would kill you.
